logo issThe Italian National Institute of Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanità - ISS) is the main biomedical and public health research institute in Italy, and the leading technical and scientific body of the Italian National Health Service. It conducts scientific research in a wide variety of fields, from molecular and genetic research to population-based studies of risk factors for disease and disability. Its mission is to promote public health at national and international level, by means of research, surveillance, prevention, training and communication activities, aimed at disseminating evidence-based knowledge to policy makers, health professionals and citizens. ISS current staff includes approximately 900 scientific researchers organised in 6 Departments and 18 National Centres, assisted by additional administrative and technical-scientific staff.
The Department of Cardiovascular, Dysmetabolic and Ageing-Associated Diseases – which is responsible for the JA Advantage as co-leader of WP5 and partner of WP2, WP3, WP4 and WP6 – is specifically focused on the promotion of healthy and active aging in a life course perspective, through the identification of prevention strategies for the major age-associated conditions. The topics addressed include the epidemiology of ageing and the longitudinal assessment of health determinants in large population-based cohorts.
